In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes the creative force that is known as Mod Sun to the Tuna on Toast Podcast Studio (aka Stryker's second bedroom)

As Stryker says at the top, Mod Sun is a talented and prolific writer, performer, producer, musician, director and singer. The episode begins with Mod telling Stryker that they actually met 10 years ago when Mod was working with Cisco Adler out in Malibu! Mod Sun talks to Stryker about why he left his previous band many years ago which he was the drummer in...The band was called Four Letter Lie. They were a really good band! That was the time he became who we know as Mod Sun.

Stryker asks Mod Sun about his childhood growing up on a farm in Minnesota, raised by his Mom and sister. Mod mentions his Dad as being totally wild but someone who was also full of charisma.

The guys talk about Mod's documentary titled "Remember Me Just Like This" as well as the fact that Mod has been invested in the type of music he is making today and the scene, since he was 13 years old! Mod tells Stryker that it wasn't until working with John Feldman that he felt a feeling of "redemption". John was the first to tell Mod that he was good , that he was special, that he was full of talent!

Stryker and Mod Sun talk about his brand new song called "Rich Kids Ruin Everything", Mod worked with John Feldman once again and the artist Lil Aaron contributed as well. T

he guys discuss bands like Something Corporate and the song "If You See Jordan" and New Found Glory which leads to Mod telling Stryker about his first time meeting Travis Barker.

Mod Sun talks about going to a very early Fall Out Boy concert, Mod Sun was the only person in the front row area that knew the words to "Where is Your Boy Tonight". Mod tells Stryker about the time he snuck backstage and gave Pete Wentz an Ipod mini with Mod Sun's musical project called I'll Buy Myself, it was 10 songs!

The guys talked about Mod producing the new Avril Lavigne album titled Love Sux. Stryker also asks if Machine Gun Kelly bought Mod a new car after he kicked in his windshield!

Mod Sun is an awesome dude that is filled with talent and charisma, it was such a pleasure to have him on, thank you again for watching and listening to Tuna on Toast with Stryker.

Tuna on Toast with Chris Carrabba Dashboard Confessional

The great Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional joins Ted Stryker for another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker. 

Dashboard just released their new album titled All The Truth That I Can Tell.

 

The guys talk about the new album, the excitement and anxiety that comes with it, Chris is also super happy to see the vinyl in person which Stryker has out on the center table.

 

Chris discusses playing live and his goal for every live show!  Chris talks about writing the album before the pandemic, he also talks about working with James Paul Wisner again!

James produced early Dashboard albums like The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most.  

Chris tells Stryker the new album was written pre-pandemic. 

 

Stryker asks Chris about his mindset in 1998-1999 when it came to actually being a professional musician!  Chris talks about what his musical goals were and also about being in the band Further Seems Forever. 

Chris tells Stryker how important Napster and LimeWire were for his career! It was bad for the music business but good for Chris! 

 

Chris talks about watching surf and skate videos and loving the music and waiting for the end credits to see who the bands were.  A few bands in particular that Chris liked were Minor Threat, Fugazi, and Operation Ivy and many bands from the label Epitaph (shoutout Brett Gurewitz) and Fat Wreck Chords (shoutout Fat Mike) 

 

Chris talks about the Florida music scene and how inclusive it was.  

Chris discusses going on the road for his first tour with New Found Glory, followed by a tour with Face to Face, H2O and Snapcase and how unbelievably cool all those bands were! 

Chris tells Stryker about the pep talk that Toby Morse from H2O gave him! 

The guys talk about the When We Were Young Festival taking place in Vegas with bands like Thursday and My Chemical Romance. 

The guys chat about navigating the music business.

Chris tells Stryker about the emotions that came along with the success.....from Screaming Infidelities to Hands Down to Vindicated on the Spider Man 2 soundtrack and everything in between. 

Stryker asks Chris about his terrible motorcycle accident that happened in June of 2020. Chris had to learn how to play guitar again AND how to brush his teeth and lift his arms above his head.

Stryker shifts gears and asks about first learning how to play guitar, Chris talks about being self taught but also taking 10 lessons at a guitar shop a few years ago and going undercover to do it. 

Speaking of the new album, Chris Carrabba's favorite song off the new album is the track called "Me and Mine" which is about his family.

Tuna on Toast with Lydia Night - The Regrettes

Ted Stryker welcomes the smart and talented frontwoman Lydia Night from The Regrettes to the Tuna on Toast Studio. Please keep in mind, this podcast was recorded/filmed way back early November! 

The episode starts with Stryker telling Lydia how much he still appreciates the birthday call from Lydia back in 2019.  

They discuss writing the new songs and how emotional it was because of how honest and authentic the lyrics are.

Lydia talks about writing over zoom and going with the band to Joshua Tree to write and record!  The band ended up writing ten songs in ten days! 

Lydia tells Stryker about writing and recording the song "Monday" as well as chatting about Olivia Rodrigo making an appearance in the video. 

Lydia talks about how the current lineup of The Regrettes met and came to be. 

The Regrettes are a four piece consisting of Lydia, Genessa Gariano, Brooke Dickson and Drew Thomsen. 

Lydia tells Stryker about a band she was in at a very young age called Pretty Little Demons, they played the South by Southwest Music Festival.  This was a really good band that wrote songs and toured, Lydia was only 12 years old! 

Lydia talks about opening for Peaches as well! 

Stryker and Lydia discuss another band she was in called Dead Man's Bones that Ryan Gosling was a part of as well as Zach Shields. 

Lydia talks about the new album Further Joy (which is not released as of today!) and what those two words mean to her.

Lydia is open and honest about anxiety, depression and mental health.

Lydia talks Coachella 2022 as well as touring!

Tuna on Toast with Fat Mike NOFX

Fat Mike joins Ted Stryker for another episode of Tuna on Toast! The interview starts with Stryker asking Mike some hard hitting questions that were actually written by Fat Mike. This leads into some talk about Mike's Cokie the clown shoes which he wore in his uber ride. The guys chatter about Travis Barker here as well. Mike tells Stryker about the first time dressed in woman's clothes publicly, walking through the Heathrow Airport. The guys talk about the early NOFX days and the loan Mike got from his Dad to start Fat Wreck Chords. Mike tells Stryker about the first time hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit and the time he passed on going to Amoeba Records with Krist Novacellic. Mike talks about the difference between Oz Fest and the Warped Tour and how much he loved Warped! The guys ping pong all over the place as this leads to chatter about Brett Gurewitz, Epitaph Records, and Bad Religion. Mike talks about attempting to get his real estate license in 1989! Mike tells Stryker what he looks for in bands that he's signed over the years...and Mike says he's starting a new label, focusing on individual songs. Mike also reveals that he and the great rapper, the DOC are working together on a project called Co Defendants. Fat Mikes gives a huge shout out to the awesome MJ Rodriguez, the first trans actor to ever win a Golden Globe! MJ will appear in Fat Mike's musical! Tuna on Toast with K. Flay

In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes the incredibly talented and smart creative wiz K. Flay to the Tuna on Toast Studio (aka the spare bedroom at Stryker's house).  Make sure to check out all of K. Flays music including her laters EP's...Inside Voices and Outside Voices.

The episode starts hot (before camera are turned on, mics are rolling) with an off topic chat about water anxiety, safe words, jumping out of airplanes and K. Flay not using a coaster on the table.

Stryker and K. Flay talk about her tour which is about to kick off, she's been preparing in a new and unique way for her.....Meeting with an acting coach! 

K. Flay and Stryker discuss song writing and co-writing with other artists like grandson, Bishop Briggs and Walk the Moon. 

K. Flay tells Stryker all about her first major record deal with RCA back in 2012 and what that experience was like.

This leads into lots of chatter about signing to Night Street Records (Dan Reynolds label).

K. Flay reveals her love for Soap Operas and sitcoms (Parks and Rec and Friends) as well as her love for DeMar DeRozen and the Chicago Bulls.

Tuna on Toast with Bad Suns

In this episode, Stryker welcomes Chris "Christo" Bowman and Gavin Bennett from Bad Suns to the Tuna on Toast Podcast Studio aka my second bedroom.

Before the guys even get going, a chat about the decor in the room leads to a really funny chat about reality TV.  From Flavor of Love to Real Chance of Love. Below Deck and Million Dollar Listing.  

 

Bad Suns released their 4th full length studio album called Apocalypse Whenever on January 28th 2022 (this chat was conducted in mid January)

 

Gavin and Christo discuss meeting each other in 7th grade, playing gigs in high school. and the influence Blink 182 had on the band.  This is a great refresher on the history of the band.

 

Christo tells a great story about his Mom, who is a flight attendant, she gave a Bad Suns CD to a passenger on the plane who worked for Interscope Records, that CD ended up in the hands of their producer, Eric Palmquist.

 

Gavin and Bennett also discuss signing with Epitaph Records, a label they have loved since before they had a record deal. 

 

Stryker, Gavin and Bennett talk about the Apocalypse Whenever infomercial and how it came to be.

 

The guys also talk about the recent Angels and Airwaves tour and how cool Tom Delonge was to tour with for a variety of reasons which Christo reveals.

Tuna on Toast with Ilan Rubin (Member of Nine Inch Nails and Angels and Airwaves)

Ilan Rubin Is a drummer in the rock n roll hall of fame band Nine inch Nails!

He is also the the drummer (and co writer of many songs) for the Tom Delonge fronted band Angels and Airwaves. 

 

On top of that, he's released a ton of music as The New Regime as well as under Ilan Rubin PLUS he's worked with Paramore!  Words do not do him justice!  

 

Ilan knew at a very young age, well before 10 years old, that he wanted to pursue music professionally.  This episode is a very fun ride on how he was able to make it happen! 

 

Recently he's been practicing less because he's busy scoring films now, including Tom Delonge's new movie "Monsters of California".

 

When asked about the greatest bands of all time, Ilan tells Stryker The Beatles are the best song writers while Led Zeppelin is the best band. 

 

In March of 2020, under his band name The New Regime, Ilan says he put out his best work and was also on the road touring with Silversun Pickups, sadly, all of that came to a halt due to Covid. 

 

Stryker and Ilan chat about his career as a solo artist compared to that as a member of both Nine Inch Nails and Angels and Airwaves.  Everything from the style of music to the difference in transportation from show to show (super nice bus vs small van).

 

The guys discuss two of the more recent Ilan Rubin released songs, "Talk Talk Talk" and "Chaos in Motion".  Stryker believes they would have sounded great in the movie Licorice Pizza directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. 

 

The guys discuss where Ilan's music fits in, as well as Ilan's take on songwriting,  producers, and bands who simply copy an old formula

 

He thinks data is the biggest thing to ruin music since the streaming world started.  Artists are getting signed based off one tik tok song which is making it much harder to find legacy bands.

 

The guys then have an animated chat about new music and new music on the radio and how radio in general can be better. 

 

Ilan tells Stryker about his audition to become the drummer for Nine Inch Nails, Ilan was only 19 years old! THIS IS WILD!  

 

It was shocking to hear that his time with Paramore was the first time he was in a band with people his age or younger!

 

Stryker asks Ilan about his working relationship with Tom Delonge and what it's like writing songs with Tom.

Tuna on Toast with The Wombats Matthew Murphy Murph

Keep in mind this interview was conducted just BEFORE Christmas 2021. 

The new Wombats album is officially out titled Fix Yourself, Not The World.

Stryker welcomes Matthew Murphy aka Murph to the Tuna on Toast studio where the guys begin their day hitting tennis balls and golf balls in the backyard (checkout Youtube)

This leads to a chat about golf and playing golf on the road.

 

Murph shares his feelings leading up to the album release and hitting the road in the crazy time we live in mixed with balancing his home life and professional life. 

 

Stryker asks Murph about the making of the new album, Fix Yourself, Not The World. Both Dan and Tord came out to Los Angeles before the world went mad to work on the new Wombats album.  During lockdown, Murph talks about finishing it up at his home in Southern California mixed with many zoom sessions with the guys. 

 

Murph also discusses the album title and how it came to be.

Stryker then asks Murph about the Wombats song "If You Ever Leave, I'm Coming With You".

 

Murph and Strykler discuss the longevity and success of the band and how it's been a slow build, but a very consistent and successful build! 

 

Murph tells Stryker he sees the Wombats as a very Pixies (esque) band in terms of their career.

 

Stryker asks Murph about his love for Los Angeles and why he makes LA his home. 

 

Murph also talks about the early shows the Wombats first played in Los Angeles and how they had to cancel their next show because as Murph said "he went for it".  

 

Murph talks about the song "Poke the Bear" as well as "People Don't Change People, Time Does".

 

Murph then talks about growing up In Liverpool and what the music scene was like at that time.  Murph tells Strykler about playing Radiohead and Weezer covers as well as the time he auditioned to join an actual Radiohead tribute band named Fake Plastic.  

 

Murph then tells Stryker about his college years where he met Dan and Tord and the circumstances surrounding The Wombats getting a record deal!  The guys started their own club night titled Little Miss Pipedream and things started to roll from there.

 

Murph is such a great guy and super talented, this was a very fun episode, so glad I got to know him and his story a bit more, hope you enjoy the show and thanks as always for the support! 

Tuna on Toast with Chad Tepper

Ted Stryker welcomes Chad Tepper to the Tuna on Toast Studio.

This is such a fun, emotional, and inspiring episode into the life and history of Chad.  While he is a star on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, Stryker knows of Chad solely through is music. 

Chad talks about his collabs with Simple Plan, Bowling for Soup and Travie McCoy, and tells a great story of how he struck up a friendship with Pierre Bouvier.

Chad shares for the first time publicly just how tough his childhood was, his family was homeless and struggling.  Chad gets into all the details, again, it's very emotional.

Chad lists The Killers, Sum 41, Good Charlotte and Lady Gaga as a few bands/artists he would love to collab with!

Stryker and Chad discuss his future endeavors which include potentially signing to a big time major label

Tuna on Toast with Rise Against Tim McIlrath

Rise Against released their 9th full length studio album titled "Nowhere Generation" in June of 2021!  Tim McIlrath from Rise Against joins Stryker on a really fun and entertaining episode of Tuna on Toast. 

Tim and Stryker discuss that it's been more than 20 years since the release of their album The Unraveling.  Tim talks about his early goals for the band and how weird it was to finally declare that he is a professional musician. 

 

This leads into Tim telling Stryker all about his return to college during the pandemic...NorthEastern Illinois University!  Tim is back in school going for his degree that he was so close to getting many years ago.

Tim talks about meeting with his counselors and being recognized in his classes and which class has been the most difficult. Tim also mentions that some of his classes have helped him navigate this crazy time we live in. 

 

Tim then talks about how Rise Against met Fat Mike from NOFX and what led to him signing the band.  Rise Against didn't have one show under their belt at the time! Tim also tells a great story of a meeting both he and Joe had with Fat Mike.  The guys drove from Chicago to Detroit to chat with Mike. 

 

Many of their early shows they opened for Strung Out and Mad Caddies, NOFX and Sick of it All.

 

Tim talks about the band going to a major label and what the band thought was going to happen professionally vs what actually happened. 

Stryker asks Tim about a show just before the pandemic in which Rise Against opened for the Misfits in Los Angeles.

 

Tim then discusses why they covered the Misfits song "Hybrid Moment" for the Rise Against "Nowhere Sessions" EP as well as the song "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

 

When discussing being the opening act so often early in the career of Rise Against, Tim said "the band you become has a lot to do with your introduction to the industry".

 

The guys also talk about the future of Rise Against.  Tim also gives wonderful advice when it comes to being a new band.

 

Tim Mcllrath is a smart and talented dude full of an energy that is absolutely infectious... And as Tim says, there will always be things to Rise Against which means we should have lots of great music from the guys for many years to come.
